Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in Port St. Lucie just yet. Mother Nature may have a few nice days, but she’s always prepared to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, hindering its performance when the temperatures begin to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from running as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the approaching days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area regularly to ensure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that could have built up through the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner might end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner can be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Port St. Lucie will probably go up and down over the last few days of winter, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can impact the performance of your air conditioner. At Custom Air Systems Inc in Port St. Lucie, we are always available to inspect any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or purchasing a new system.
